Surgery is serious and can be scary - for parents and children alike. Part of the anxiety comes from not knowing what will happen. To help you and your child feel more comfortable, we want you to know as much as possible about the surgical process before surgery.
Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital provides an instructional class just for pediatric patients 3-12 years old, to familiarize you and your child about what to expect and how to prepare for their experience. This class will discuss what will happen from admission to discharge, including the importance of not eating or drinking after midnight, where parents will be during and after surgery, and how the child may feel when he or she wakes up.
• Class is offered at St. Mary's Hospital from 7:00pm-8:00pm.*
• Once your child's surgery is scheduled, we recommend that this class be taken a week prior to the surgery date.
• Due to limited space, we ask that only parents and child attend the class.
• Snack will be provided.
*Please meet in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit on the 7th Floor of the main hospital. (When you get off the 7th floor elevator, turn right and then take another quick right. On your left will be a set of double doors. Press the silver button to the right of the doors, enter, and go to the first room on your right.)
